For Tucson High School Teacher ST. PAUL, Minn. - March 25, 1996 - A photo trip to Yosemite National Park resulted in more than spectacular images for a Tuscon high school photography instructor. The images were spectacular enough to earn the Grand Prize in the category "Portfolios: Faculty or Staff" in the Photo Imaging Education Association (PIEA 1996 Student-Teacher Photo Exhibit and Competition. PIEA is a national organization for photo educators who teach at primary, secondary, junior college and university levels. Jerry Halfmann, an instructor at Tucson Magnet High School and a photography teacher for 19 years, submitted a portfolio of ten images that were taken at Yosemite with a 1972-vintage Pentax Spotmatic 2A and 28mm Pentax lens; he used 3M brand ScotchChromeâ„¢ 100 color slide film. This is the first year that PIEA has had a faculty contest. "My advice to my students is to think about what they are shooting and what they want the image to look like when they're done," says Halfmann, who also has worked as a newspaper photographer. "Some students think they need a $10,000 camera, but I tell them that it's more important to have determination to keep trying and not give up. They don't need to have an expensive camera and expensive film to be successful. Some of the most incredible images I've ever seen were shot with a pocket 35mm camera." This year entries from two of Halfmann's students were winners: Jessma Evans won second prize in the category "Portfolios: Grade 10-11-12" and Suzanne Rugg won third prize in the category "Single Images: Grade 10-11-12." Images submitted by Halfmann's students have won grand prizes in previous years. Winning entries for this year's PIEA Student-Teacher Photo Exhibit and Competition were chosen among 266 submissions sent by more than 800 people from the educational institutions. During the recent Photo Marketing Association (PMA) show in Las Vegas, attended by over 30,000 people, 150 of the submitted images representing the work of 92 students and teachers were displayed in exhibition. Ultimately, from the 266 portfolios and photographs submitted, 24 entrants were awarded prizes in seven categories. The winning entries will tour the United States during the next year. The images will also be published in Photo Imaging, the PIEA newsletter, and Photo Marketing magazine. In addition, they will be posted on the World Wide Web with the PIEA home page, which is at the PMA Web site (http://www.pmai.org).
